How to Remove a Pre-Cut Sunstrip Without Damaging Your Windscreen

Removing a pre-cut sunstrip is straightforward. The process takes a few minutes, and the risk of scratching the glass is low as long as you use the right tool and keep the pull steady.

The Right Tool for the Job

A plastic trim removal tool or a plastic scraper is what you need. Both are cheap and widely available from any motor factor. The keyword is plastic. Anything with a metal edge risks scratching the glass, particularly at the lower corners where the strip sits close to the seal. A fingernail works in a pinch, but a plastic tool gives you more control and a cleaner lift.

Removing the Strip

  1. Start at a lower corner. Either side works. Slide the plastic tool under the edge of the strip and lift gently until you have a section you can grip with your fingers.
  2. Pull slowly upward and toward the centre of the car. Keep the angle low and the tension steady. Pulling sharply or at a steep angle can cause the vinyl to snap rather than peel.
  3. Once the side edge is free, widen your grip to hold both the top and bottom corners of that section. Pull the strip away from the glass in one controlled movement.
  4. If the vinyl snaps at any point, that is not a problem. Slide the tool under the edge at the break point and continue from there.

If the Adhesive Is Stubborn

Most strips come away cleanly. If the adhesive leaves a residue, a tar and glue remover or a dedicated sticky residue remover spray will break it down without affecting the glass. Spray onto the residue, leave it for a minute, then wipe away with a clean microfibre cloth. Finish with isopropyl alcohol or a glass cleaner to remove any remaining film from the glue remover itself, and leave the glass fully clean.

If you are fitting a replacement, the step-by-step sunstrip fitting guide covers surface prep, positioning, and the soapy water method. Isopropyl alcohol on the glass before fitting clears the last of any residue and gives the adhesive a clean surface to bond to. The pre-cut sunstrips range is available in 11 colours. If you are changing colour, the sunstrip colour guide covers all 11 options with guidance on which suits your car.
